Fulham and Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi recently revealed that he has not yet learned Nigeria’s new national anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee.”
In a podcast episode of Is This Seat Taken? hosted by Nollywood actress Chinasa Anukam, Iwobi explained that when the anthem plays before international matches, he simply stands still, closes his eyes, and places his hand on his chest.
The anthem, originally written by Lillian Jean Williams in 1959 and composed by Frances Berda, was replaced by “Arise, O Compatriots” in 1978. However, it was reintroduced in May 2024 after President Bola Tinubu endorsed its return.
The change has stirred debate in Nigeria, with some prominent voices like activist Aisha Yesufu expressing strong opposition to reverting to the old anthem.
Iwobi’s candid admission highlights the challenge many face in adjusting to the new national symbol, even among celebrated sports figures. His simple act of closing his eyes during the anthem reflects both respect for the tradition and a personal struggle with the change.
