Beyoncé has made history yet again by winning her first Grammy in a country music category. Already one of the most-decorated and nominated artists in Grammy history, Beyoncé’s latest achievement sets a new record.
The 2024 Grammy Awards were held at the Crypto Arena in Los Angeles, where Beyoncé took home the award for Best Country Duo/Group Performance for her song “II Most Wanted,” a collaboration with Miley Cyrus.
This year, Beyoncé led the pack with 11 nominations, including for the prestigious Album of the Year with her critically acclaimed eighth studio album, Cowboy Carter. She also made waves by being the first Black woman to be nominated in the Country & American Roots categories. In total, seven of her songs from Cowboy Carter were nominated in four different genres.
With her win for “II Most Wanted,” Beyoncé became the first Black woman to win a Grammy for a country music song. The last time a Black woman won in a similar category was in 1975 when the Pointer Sisters received the award. Before this, no Black female solo artist had won a Grammy for a country song. Although Mickey Guyton was nominated in 2021 for her song “Black Like Me,” this Grammy marked a major milestone for Black women in country music.
This year also marked another first: Beyoncé became the first Black woman ever nominated for the top Grammy prize of Album of the Year in a country category.
Her historic win is especially significant considering the earlier snub at the 2024 Country Music Association Awards, where Beyoncé received zero nominations despite the success of Cowboy Carter. She had better luck at the 2024 People’s Choice Country Awards, where she earned 12 nominations but did not win any.
Additionally, in December, Beyoncé claimed her first country music awards at the 2024 Billboard Music Awards, being named Top Country Female Artist.
Beyoncé’s victory is not just a personal triumph, but also a powerful moment for diversity and inclusion in the music industry.
