Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo recently shared his views on the importance of preserving Yoruba culture and traditions, even as a practicing Christian. He highlighted that cultural heritage, such as Ifa, holds deep significance and should not be dismissed.

Ifa is a traditional Yoruba system of divination involving complex texts and calculations. It is seen as a source of wisdom and intellectual growth. Obasanjo emphasized its value, saying, “Whoever says Ifa is nothing, I will say that person is a big fool.”

Obasanjo also expressed concern about how Yoruba traditions, including language, food, and dress, are being sidelined. He said, “We must not joke with our culture. Our language is not vernacular; it is part of our identity.”

The former president praised Ara, a renowned female talking drummer, for breaking cultural barriers. Traditionally, women were not allowed to play the talking drum, but Ara mastered the skill and gained recognition. Obasanjo noted that her achievement shows the importance of excelling in one’s craft.

While Obasanjo is a devoted Christian who attended church services earlier that day, he stressed that his faith does not conflict with his respect for Yoruba traditions. He explained, “Before Christianity and Islam, we had Ifa. It represents wisdom and understanding of life.”

Ara, who began drumming at age 10, thanked Obasanjo for honoring her work and encouraged parents to teach their children the value of cultural preservation.
