Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra State and the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, shared his unique plan to retire in Onitsha and teach at a secondary school. Obi made the announcement while visiting Dennis Memorial Grammar School in Onitsha on the International Day of Education.
Obi explained that he was simply passing by the school when he decided to stop and mark the special occasion with the students. He also mentioned that the school was celebrating its 100th anniversary, which made the visit even more meaningful.
During his time with the students, Obi spoke about the importance of education. He encouraged the students, telling them that education is the most important thing they can have for success in life. He praised them for already being on the right path to greatness and urged them to stay focused on their studies. According to Obi, some of them could one day become governors or even presidents.
He also shared a memory from his own time as a student at the school. Obi recalled how, in 1970, he stood at the school gate to greet General Gowon, who visited as Nigeria’s military leader. He reflected on how education had empowered him to rise to a position where he could sit at the same table as such leaders and make decisions that shaped the country.
Looking ahead, Obi expressed his hope to retire in Onitsha and take up a teaching position. He wants to use this opportunity to inspire and motivate children, showing them that with education, they too can achieve great things in life.
