The Trump administration has officially renamed two major landmarks in the United States. The Gulf of Mexico will now be known as the Gulf of America, and Alaska’s tallest peak, Denali, has been renamed Mount McKinley.

The Interior Department announced the changes on Friday, fulfilling President Donald Trump’s campaign promise. Trump signed these executive orders on his first day in office to honor historical U.S. figures and landmarks.

Denali, which means “tall” in the Koyukon Indigenous language, was renamed in 1975 at Alaska’s request. Before that, it was called Mount McKinley, in honor of President William McKinley, who served from 1897 to 1901. Trump praised McKinley for his contributions to the country, including expanding U.S. territories like Hawaii, Guam, and Puerto Rico.

The Gulf of America renaming might spark debate internationally. Mexico, which shares the coastline of the Gulf, emphasized that “Gulf of Mexico” is the globally recognized name used for centuries in navigation. Despite this, the U.S. Geological Survey will now use “Gulf of America” domestically.

These changes reflect Trump’s focus on preserving U.S. heritage and celebrating historical leaders. While some may support the decision, international recognition and acceptance remain uncertain.
