A heartbreaking incident has left the community of Abagana, Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State in shock. On January 21, 2025, Obiozor Sunday Nwaka, a welder, poured petrol on his wife, Blessing Chioma Nwaka, and set her on fire during an argument over suspicions of infidelity.
Blessing, the family’s breadwinner, suffered severe burns and was rushed to a nearby hospital. Sadly, she passed away the following morning, leaving behind five sons. A viral video showed her struggling to escape with third-degree burns, which sparked outrage across social media.
The suspect admitted to the crime, claiming he acted out of anger because he didn’t know his wife’s whereabouts the previous day. While in police custody, he tearfully begged his children to forgive him for his actions.
Contrary to statements from the victim’s family and church members that Blessing never reported abuse, a close friend disclosed that the deceased had confided about her husband’s history of violence and previous threats to her life.
The Anambra State Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Mrs. Ify Obinabo, visited the suspect and condemned the act. She assured the public that Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration would ensure justice is served and the suspect faces the full weight of the law.
This tragic event highlights the urgent need to address domestic violence and ensure that victims are protected. The government’s commitment to justice serves as a reminder that such heinous acts will not go unpunished.
