Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced that Canada will take firm action if Donald Trump imposes new tariffs on Canadian goods. Speaking at a press conference, Trudeau said Canada is ready to protect its interests and support its citizens.

“If unfair tariffs are imposed, we will respond strongly,” Trudeau stated.

Trump recently revealed plans to introduce a 25% tariff on goods from Canada and Mexico, potentially starting on February 1. These tariffs could raise prices for American consumers, as Canada and Mexico are two of the largest suppliers of goods to the US.

Trudeau also addressed Trump’s order to review the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) and its effects on American businesses and workers. The review is also linked to efforts to stop illegal drug trafficking and undocumented migration.

Trudeau clarified that Canada has taken significant steps to address these issues, investing over $1 billion in a border security plan. He highlighted that less than 1% of fentanyl and illegal immigration into the US comes from Canada.

Additionally, the Prime Minister emphasized Canada’s role as a key supplier of resources to the US economy. He noted that Canada provides essential materials like energy, steel, and aluminum, which are critical for American industries.

“Canada is a trusted partner and a secure source of resources for the United States,” Trudeau said. “We are committed to building a stronger North American economy together.”

If enacted, the tariffs could lead to higher costs for American consumers. While Trump argues that the tariffs will affect foreign exporters, experts warn that US shoppers will likely face increased prices, as businesses may pass on the costs.
