The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has successfully convicted Lukumanu Sani Waziri, an accountant at Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital (UDUTH) in Sokoto, for embezzling over ₦60 million in public funds.
Waziri was found guilty of using the Government Integrated Financial Information System (GIFMIS) to illegally access and divert funds. The fraud took place when he changed bank account details meant for state taxes in Kogi, Edo, Bauchi, and Zamfara States. The funds were then transferred to private accounts, including those belonging to him and his accomplice, Monday Michael Adejo.
In 2021, Waziri and two others were charged with fraud and corruption before Justice M. Abdulgafar of the Federal High Court in Sokoto. ICPC prosecutors presented evidence showing how Waziri altered financial records and facilitated the unlawful transfer of millions of naira.
Waziri was convicted on seven of the nine charges against him. The court imposed the following sentences:
- One year in prison or a ₦200,000 fine for Counts 1 and 2
- One year in prison for Counts 3, 4, and 5 without the option of a fine
- Three years in prison or a ₦500,000 fine for Counts 8 and 9
These sentences will run concurrently.
This conviction underscores the ICPC’s ongoing commitment to tackling corruption and ensuring that public funds are protected. The case serves as a reminder that individuals who abuse their positions of trust will be held accountable for their actions.
