TikTok threatens to go dark on Sunday, seeks Biden’s intervention

TikTok has warned that it may stop working in the United States on Sunday unless President Joe Biden’s administration assures companies like Apple and Google that they will not face legal action when a ban on the app takes place.

This comes after the U.S. Supreme Court upheld a law that could force TikTok’s Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to sell the app or face a national security ban. If the app is banned, it could go dark in just two days, affecting 170 million American users.

The future of TikTok is now in the hands of President-elect Donald Trump, who is set to take office on Monday. Trump has expressed his intention to help save TikTok, though he said he needs time to review the situation before making a final decision.

In response to the court’s decision, TikTok released a statement saying that the Biden administration must provide clarity and reassurance to service providers. Without this, TikTok says it will be forced to shut down on January 19.

TikTok’s CEO, Shou Chew, thanked Trump for his willingness to find a solution and reiterated that the app is vital for free speech and creativity for millions of Americans. Chew assured users that the company would continue working to keep the app available.

Trump has not yet made a final decision but has promised to update the public soon.
