Afrobeats artist Spyro recently shared the difficulties he has faced in the Nigerian music industry after publicly declaring his faith in Jesus Christ. In an interview with Echo Room, Spyro revealed a conversation he had with popular R&B artist-turned-pastor, Banky W, who warned him about the challenges that come with proclaiming Christ.
According to Spyro, Banky W told him that his troubles in the industry started after he made his faith known. Spyro explained that embracing the “Jesus boy” identity has led to criticism and a lack of support from key players in the music scene.
“My biggest challenge in the industry right now is discrimination,” Spyro shared. “When I came out with the ‘Jesus boy’ brand, I’ve faced some of the harshest criticisms.”
Spyro went on to point out the lack of media support when he drops new music. “How many media moguls post my music?” he asked. “I see them supporting other artists, but when it comes to me, it’s not the same. Once you come out and declare Christ, you face a different kind of challenge.”
Drawing from Banky W’s personal experience, Spyro explained that embracing his faith has led him into a kind of war in the music industry. “Banky W told me that once he chose to follow a godly path, the battle started,” Spyro said. “When he was living as a ‘bad boy,’ everything was fine. But as soon as he proclaimed Christ, things changed.”
Spyro’s story sheds light on the struggles many artists face when they choose to be open about their faith in a competitive industry. Despite the challenges, he continues to stand firm in his beliefs and aims to stay true to his values in both his career and personal life.
