The South East region of Nigeria is witnessing a significant reduction in tension, thanks to the arrest of Simon Ekpa by Finnish authorities and the efforts of Operation Udoka.
General Christopher Musa, the Chief of Defence Staff, recently discussed these developments while appearing before the House of Representatives Committee on Defence to present the 2025 budget. He explained how the combination of proactive measures and non-violent strategies is helping to stabilize the region.
Musa said, “With the arrest of Simon Ekpa, it has greatly reduced the tension. Also with Operation Udoka, we’re also doing that, picking up most of the leadership that are there, taking them out, and then making sure that the place is peaceful.
“The sit-at-home on Mondays is gradually diminishing. We’re also working with the political leaders there because we understand, as I said always, that we need to have local support because without it, it’s difficult. You know, the terrain is very challenging, so we need to work together. It is improving.”
According to General Musa, the arrest of Simon Ekpa has played a major role in calming tensions. Furthermore, Operation Udoka, led by the Defence Headquarters, is making notable progress in bringing peace to the region. The operation focuses on addressing security issues through non-kinetic (non-violent) means, which are proving to be effective.
The recent holiday period in the South East was particularly peaceful, demonstrating the success of these measures. General Musa emphasized the military’s commitment to maintaining this progress and ensuring long-term peace in the region.
As a result of these efforts, the South East is gradually returning to stability, offering hope for a more peaceful future.
