The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) recently announced Eric Chelle as the new head coach of the Super Eagles. However, this decision has sparked debate among football fans and experts, with many questioning the criteria used to select him.
Eric Chelle, a former coach of Mali’s national team, previously managed Algerian club MC Oran. Under his leadership, the team won two matches, drew one, and lost four. His final game as MC Oran’s coach was a 1-0 victory in the Algerian Cup against ES Setif, just before he accepted the offer to lead Nigeria’s Super Eagles.
At his unveiling at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja, Chelle spoke enthusiastically about the team’s potential. He praised Nigeria’s football history, mentioning legendary players like Rashidi Yekini, Daniel Amokachi, and John Obi Mikel. Chelle promised to focus on attacking football, saying, “I love scoring goals. My teams are never lacking in goals, and the Super Eagles will be no exception.”
Despite Chelle’s optimism, many Nigerians remain skeptical. The Super Eagles are currently struggling in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, sitting in fifth place in Group C with just three points from four games. Critics argue that Chelle’s previous record may not be enough to revive the team’s chances.
When questioned about the selection process, NFF officials declined to provide clear answers. While NFF spokesperson Ademola Olajire promised an official statement, a staff member from the Technical Department admitted that only the Technical Committee could explain the criteria.
In response to the criticism, NFF President Ibrahim Gusau appealed to Nigerians to rally behind Chelle. “We appreciate the passion Nigerians have for football, and that’s why there are mixed reactions. However, we urge everyone to support Coach Chelle as he works to bring success to the Super Eagles,” Gusau said;
Eric Chelle faces the enormous task of turning around the Super Eagles’ fortunes and meeting the high expectations of fans. With the NFF promising full support, only time will tell if Chelle can deliver the results Nigerians are hoping for.
