Wike bans used items markets, scavenging in FCT

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has announced a ban on markets for used items, popularly called “Panteka,” across Abuja. This temporary ban will last for two weeks and takes effect on Tuesday, January 14, 2025.

The decision was revealed during a meeting of the FCT Security Council. Alongside the ban on Panteka markets, the minister also prohibited scavenging activities within Abuja city and its nearby areas. Scavengers are now only allowed to operate at designated dump sites.

Explaining the move, Wike’s media aide, Lere Olayinka, stated that these measures are meant to address security challenges and protect public infrastructure from damage. The minister warned that individuals arrested for vandalizing public facilities would face serious charges, including economic sabotage and attempted murder.

These actions reflect the government’s commitment to ensuring orderliness and safety in Abuja. Residents are urged to cooperate with these directives as the authorities enforce the new regulations.
