Nigerian Police Begin Enforcement Of Insurance For Vehicle Owners In February, Warn Violators

In February 2025, the Nigerian Police will begin strictly enforcing the law that requires all vehicle owners to have third-party insurance before driving on public roads. This is in line with the Insurance Act (Section 68) and the 1945 Motor Vehicle (Third Party Insurance) Act (Section 312).

Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, made this announcement during a meeting with the Commissioner for Insurance at the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM), Mr. Olusegun Ayo Omosehin, in Abuja. The IGP stressed the importance of complying with this law and warned that breaking it could lead to serious consequences such as fines, imprisonment, or both.

Starting from February 1, 2025, Nigerians are expected to have valid third-party insurance for their vehicles. The police are urging everyone to make sure they meet the legal requirements to avoid penalties.

This enforcement is part of the government’s effort to ensure road safety and protect both drivers and passengers. If you’re a vehicle owner, now is the time to get your insurance sorted before the law is enforced.

Adejobi stated, “The the IGP affirmed the importance of third-party insurance and announced February 1, 2025, as the commencement date for the enforcement of the relevant laws.

“The IGP further stated that Section 68 of the Insurance Act and Section 312 of the 1945 Motor Vehicle (Third Party Insurance) Act mandate that all vehicle owners possess third-party insurance before operating their vehicles on public roads.

“He urged Nigerians to comply with these laws, as violations are punishable by imprisonment, fines, or both.

“The NPF remains steadfast in collaborating with all MDAs and companies in ensuring that the protection of lives and property of all citizens of the Federal Republic of Nigeria remains paramount.”
