Authorities made a tragic discovery at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on Monday night. Two bodies were found in the landing gear compartment of a JetBlue aircraft during a routine inspection after the flight.
The plane had arrived at Fort Lauderdale around 11 p.m., coming from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York. The bodies were discovered during standard maintenance in the wheel well area, according to JetBlue.
“At this time, the identities of the individuals and the circumstances surrounding how they accessed the aircraft remain under investigation,” JetBlue said in a statement.
“This is a heartbreaking situation, and we are committed to working closely with authorities to support their efforts to understand how this occurred.”
Emergency personnel from the Broward County sheriff’s office declared both individuals dead at the scene. Investigations are now being led by the sheriff’s homicide and crime scene units, but the names of the deceased have not yet been released.
This heartbreaking incident follows another similar case in late December when a body was discovered in the landing gear of a United Airlines plane.
In addition to these tragic findings, the aviation industry has faced security issues involving unticketed passengers. In November, a Russian national boarded a Delta Air Lines flight to Paris without a ticket and was arrested upon arrival in France. On Christmas Eve, an unticketed passenger was also discovered on a Delta flight from Seattle to Honolulu.
These incidents raise concerns about safety and security measures in the aviation sector. Authorities continue their investigations to uncover more details about these events.
