South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol is facing a tense situation as the deadline for his arrest approaches. Investigators have been trying to detain him, but the arrest warrant is set to expire today. The Corruption Investigation Office (CIO) is seeking an extension to the warrant so they can move forward with the arrest.
Yoon is currently staying at his residence, guarded by loyal security forces. Despite multiple requests for questioning, he has refused to cooperate with investigators. A previous attempt to arrest him was blocked by hundreds of his guards, preventing the investigators from carrying out the arrest.
The CIO deputy director, Lee Jae-seung, announced that they would ask the court for an extension to the arrest warrant. They have also asked the police for assistance in handling the arrest, as they have faced challenges in carrying out their duties.
If arrested, Yoon could face severe consequences, including prison or even the death penalty, for his role in a controversial martial law decree last month. However, Yoon and his supporters have remained defiant, with one protest organizer, Kim Soo-yong, vowing to protect the president and his security team.
Yoon’s legal team has argued that the arrest warrant is unlawful and pledged to take further legal action against it. Additionally, the head of the president’s security service has stated that they will not allow investigators to arrest Yoon.
