In a surprising and shocking incident in Zambia, a police officer allegedly released 13 prisoners on New Year’s Eve while under the influence of alcohol.
The officer, identified as Detective Inspector Titus Phiri, reportedly took the keys to the detention cells near Kanyama in southern Zambia. Ignoring protocol, he unlocked both the male and female cells and encouraged the detainees to leave, claiming they were free to “cross over into the New Year.”
The 13 prisoners were being held on charges including assault, theft, and public fighting. Following their release, a manhunt was launched to recapture them, as they remain at large.
The Zambia Police Service issued a statement condemning the officer’s behavior and reaffirming its commitment to maintaining law and order. “Decisive action will be taken against any officer who abuses their authority or breaks the law,” the statement read.
This incident has sparked public concern about professionalism within the police force. The authorities have vowed to take firm action to restore trust and ensure accountability in law enforcement.
As the investigation continues, the public waits to see how this unusual situation will be resolved.
