The political tension in Rivers State has taken a new turn, with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and former Rivers State Governor Dr. Peter Odili trading accusations. At the heart of the dispute are claims of political control, envy, and loyalty.
The controversy began during a special Christmas carol event organized by Governor Sim Fubara. Speaking at the event, Dr. Peter Odili accused Wike of trying to dominate Rivers State and control it like his private estate. Odili praised Governor Fubara for standing firm against Wike’s alleged efforts, describing Fubara’s resistance as a bold move to safeguard the state’s governance from undue interference.
Odili’s remarks resonated with those critical of Wike’s perceived strong-handed leadership style, but they also sparked a heated response from the FCT Minister.
In a thanksgiving service held for Martins Amaewhule, a factional Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly loyal to him, Wike wasted no time addressing Odili’s comments. Wike dismissed the allegations, calling them baseless and attributing them to envy.
According to Wike, Odili’s criticism stems from frustration over his inability to achieve Wike’s level of political influence in the country. “Odili is envious because he could not reach the height I have attained politically,” Wike claimed during the service.
Wike didn’t stop there. He advised Odili to enjoy any financial or material benefits he receives from Governor Fubara in peace, without involving him in personal or political disputes.
This public exchange highlights the deepening political divide within Rivers State, particularly between key stakeholders. While Governor Sim Fubara seems determined to establish his authority, Wike’s influence in Rivers State politics remains significant, with a loyal faction rallying behind him.
On the other hand, Odili’s comments reflect a broader concern among some political leaders who view Wike’s leadership style as overbearing. The clash has further exposed the underlying power struggle within the state’s political structure.
