Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has strongly criticized the recent military honors given to Seyi Tinubu, the son of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Atiku described the event as a “gross violation of military tradition” and a “desecration” of the Nigerian Armed Forces’ long-established customs.
The controversy erupted after a video went viral online showing Seyi Tinubu being greeted with a military-style salute by a group of armed individuals as he arrived in Abeokuta, Ogun State. He later inspected the quarter guard during his visit for the first annual youth summit and empowerment program, titled “Renewed Hope Agenda: A Concrete Foundation for a Prosperous Nigeria.”
Atiku expressed deep concern over the parade, calling it a disturbing spectacle where civilians, dressed in military-like uniforms, gave military honors to the President’s son. He also questioned the legitimacy of the group involved, known as the “Nigeria Cadet Network,” which does not have official recognition from the Nigerian Armed Forces.
The use of the word “Cadet,” typically reserved for trained military personnel, raised additional concerns. Atiku pointed out that civilians were misusing this term to undermine the respected traditions of the military. An investigation by his team revealed that the “Nigeria Cadet Network” is not a registered organization.
Another troubling aspect was the display of firearms by civilians during the parade. Atiku stressed the dangers of illegal arms proliferation in Nigeria, especially during an event like this. He has called for an urgent investigation by security agencies to determine the legitimacy of the “Nigeria Cadet Network,” the legality of the firearms used, and whether any military protocols were violated by granting military honors to Seyi Tinubu.
Atiku concluded by emphasizing the importance of protecting the integrity of the Nigerian Armed Forces and ensuring that those responsible for any legal violations are held accountable
