Naomi Silekunola, the ex-queen of Ooni, is currently on hunger strike in Agodi Prison after a tragic stampede occurred during a charity event she organized in Ibadan. Naomi’s mother has shared the heartbreaking details of the situation, explaining that the police have not given them any clear information about her release. The case, which was taken to court on December 24, 2024, is now before a magistrate, and Naomi has been remanded in a custodial facility until a hearing on January 13, 2025.
Naomi has been running a foundation that supports women and children across Nigeria, and this particular event was meant to bring joy to children in Ibadan. She has organized similar charity events in other Nigerian cities without incident. However, this time, things went wrong. The venue, secured with help from Mr. Hamzat Oriyomi of Agidigbo FM, became overcrowded, leading to a stampede. In the chaos, some children were thrown over the fence, resulting in casualties.
Naomi’s mother explained that the family immediately contacted the police, army, and other security agencies to report the incident. Despite these efforts, Naomi was detained and taken to court. The magistrate could not grant her bail, and she remains in custody while awaiting the next court session.
The tragedy has left Naomi devastated, as she has always been committed to helping those in need. Her mother is pleading for forgiveness from the families who lost their children in the incident, emphasizing that the tragedy was unintentional. She is also asking Nigerians to help appeal to Governor Seyi Makinde and other authorities to intervene and secure her daughter’s release.
