The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has made significant progress in its fight against corruption over the past year. This was revealed by Dr. Musa Aliyu, SAN, the Chairman of ICPC, during a recent event in Abuja marking his one-year tenure.
Dr. Aliyu credited the Commission’s success to its focus on the rule of law, adoption of digital tools, and innovative strategies for tackling corruption. He also highlighted the government’s anti-corruption agenda and his personal policy, “CARE,” which has enhanced the Commission’s effectiveness.
The ICPC recovered ₦29.7 billion in cash, currently held in recovery accounts.₦10.986 billion in VAT was recovered and remitted to the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).₦10 billion from the COVID-19 vaccine fund was returned to the national treasury.Final forfeiture of assets worth ₦2.5 billion was secured.$966,900.83 in foreign currency was recovered and deposited in the ICPC-CBN account.
Through its Constituency and Executive Projects Tracking Initiative (CEPTI), the ICPC tracked 1,500 projects nationwide, valued at ₦610 billion, ensuring transparency and accountability in government spending.
851 petitions were received, with 342 assigned for investigation.95 cases were fully investigated, 72 filed in court, and 16 convictions secured.Old cases, some pending for over 10 years, were revived for prosecution.
323 Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) were evaluated using the ICPC’s Ethics and Integrity Compliance Scorecard (EICS).80 Anti-Corruption and Transparency Units (ACTUs) were established across MDAs.The ICPC stopped the diversion of ₦5.882 billion in public funds.
Dr. Aliyu emphasized that these achievements reflect the Commission’s dedication to making a tangible impact on governance and public accountability in Nigeria. By leveraging modern tools and fostering collaboration, the ICPC continues to drive meaningful change and ensure that citizens benefit from democracy.
Looking ahead, the ICPC aims to streamline its processes, enhance prosecutions, and sustain its efforts to combat corruption nationwide.
