FG To Begin Train Track Construction On Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway In 2025

The Federal Government has announced plans to begin constructing train tracks on Section I of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway in 2025. This project is a major part of efforts to improve Nigeria’s transportation network and boost economic development along the coastal regions.

Stretching 700 kilometers, the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway links Lagos to Calabar and traverses nine states, including Ogun, Ondo, Edo, Delta, and Cross River. Key areas along the route include Victoria Island, Eko Atlantic City, Lekki Free Trade Zone, and the Dangote Refinery.

The highway’s design incorporates a dual-purpose approach, featuring 11-inch-thick concrete pavement and rail tracks running through the center of the road. Other features include:

  • Solar-Powered CCTV Cameras: Installed for enhanced security and monitoring.
  • Lay-Bys and Security Posts: Positioned every 5-15 kilometers to ensure safety and convenience for travelers.
  • Durable Construction: Reinforced with 20mm steel for long-lasting infrastructure.

Construction of the first 47.7 kilometers in Lagos began in March 2024, with Hitech Construction Company Ltd as the lead contractor. Twenty kilometers of Section I are expected to be completed and commissioned by May 2025.

However, the project has faced challenges, including unsuitable soil and large refuse dumps that required extensive remediation. To address these issues, debris was removed and replaced with sand from the ocean.

Additionally, the initial design has been revised to reduce the number of lanes from 10 to six, allowing for cost savings without compromising quality.

The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is expected to drive significant economic growth by improving connectivity along Nigeria’s coastline. It will facilitate trade, reduce travel time, and create new business opportunities in the regions it connects.

When completed, the highway will serve as a major trade corridor, linking ports, industrial zones, and commercial hubs. With the inclusion of a train line, the project will also promote multi-modal transportation, further boosting efficiency and reducing costs.

The entire project is scheduled for completion in eight years, with sections being opened to the public as they are finished. Toll collection on completed sections will generate funds for maintenance and ensure the project’s sustainability.

The Federal Government’s commitment to the project reflects its vision for a modern, efficient transportation system that enhances connectivity and supports economic growth.
