Lagos Fresh Food Agro-Hub Generates ₦‎2.495 Billion In First Year

The Mushin Fresh Food Agro-Hub, located in Lagos, has achieved a remarkable ₦2.495 billion in its first year of operation. This success, reported by Ms. Abisola Olusanya, the Lagos State Commissioner for Agriculture and Food System, reflects the hub’s role in transforming food distribution in the city.

Opened in 2023, the Mushin Fresh Food Agro-Hub serves as a well-organized marketplace where farmers and traders can sell fresh produce directly to consumers. The hub has been a game-changer for food distribution in Lagos, offering fair pricing and reducing food waste. It operates without relying on middlemen, allowing farmers to keep more profit while providing Lagosians with affordable and fresh food.

In just one year, the hub has attracted 75,000 visitors across 81 market days. It has been instrumental in improving the livelihoods of local farmers and vendors, offering them a transparent and reliable platform to sell their produce.

According to Ms. Olusanya, the hub has contributed to socio-economic growth by creating jobs, improving food accessibility, and supporting economic development. It has helped bridge the gap between rural farmers and urban consumers, ensuring that fresh food reaches the city efficiently.

“The agro-hub is a model of innovation and sustainability, not only for Lagos but for Nigeria and even Africa,” said Olusanya.

The Mushin Fresh Food Agro-Hub plays a key role in strengthening food security in Lagos. Its establishment has boosted food availability in the city and reduced post-harvest losses by connecting farmers directly with buyers. The hub also encourages bulk buying and has set up efficient storage and logistics systems to keep costs low and ensure that fresh produce is available at affordable prices.

Lagos State has big plans to expand this initiative. Ms. Olusanya mentioned other ongoing projects, such as the Lagos Logistics Hub in Epe and the development of more agro-hubs in strategic locations across the state. These efforts aim to further streamline food supply chains and provide more economic opportunities for the growing population of Lagos.

The success of the Mushin Fresh Food Agro-Hub shows the power of innovative, community-focused initiatives in reshaping economies and improving lives.

The Mushin Fresh Food Agro-Hub has proven to be a vital part of Lagos’ economic growth, providing farmers with an organized market, reducing food waste, and helping residents access affordable, fresh produce. It’s clear that this hub is not just a marketplace, but a key part of the city’s vision for a more secure and prosperous future.
