Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, is facing a power outage after vandals damaged the 330-kilovolt Shiroro-Katampe Transmission Line. The incident took place on the night of Wednesday, December 18, 2024, around 11:43 pm, causing a disruption in power supply.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) confirmed the incident through their spokesperson, Ndidi Mbah. After the attack, a TCN team was quickly sent to investigate. They discovered that vandals had stolen a portion of the conductor between towers T216 and T218.
The TCN maintenance crew has been mobilized to replace the damaged conductor, and power supply is expected to be restored soon. However, the exact time for the restoration of power has not yet been specified.
Due to the outage, several areas of Abuja are currently without electricity, including the CBN Headquarters, Ecumenical Centre, Bank of Industry, and New Chelsea Hotel. Other affected areas include Gidan Isah, Area 10, and surrounding neighborhoods. The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) issued notices about the power loss.
This is not the first time this year that the Shiroro-Katampe Transmission Line has been attacked. In March 2024, vandals also targeted the line, marking this as the fifth such incident within just a few months.
