A heartbreaking incident occurred on December 18 at a children’s funfair in Ibadan, Oyo State, where a stampede claimed the lives of several children and left many others injured. The event, which took place at the Islamic High School in Basorun, descended into chaos due to an overwhelming crowd of children that exceeded the venue’s capacity.
Reacting to the tragedy, Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, announced on his social media platforms that the event’s organizers had been apprehended. He assured the public that a thorough investigation was underway to uncover the cause of the incident.
Governor Makinde expressed his condolences, stating that what was meant to bring joy had turned into sorrow. He disclosed that immediate steps were taken to halt the event, including deploying security personnel to restore order and sending medical teams to treat the injured. Ambulances were also dispatched, and all attendees were safely evacuated from the premises.
“We are doing everything possible to prevent further loss of lives,” the governor stated, adding that those responsible for the tragic incident would face appropriate legal actions.
While the state government has not released the names of the organizers, it was reported that the event was planned by Queen Naomi Silekunola Ogunwusi, the former wife of the Ooni of Ife, in collaboration with Agidigbo 88.7 FM, Ibadan, owned by Oriyomi Hamzat.
Agidigbo 88.7 FM had announced the free 2024 Children’s Fun Fair on Facebook on Tuesday, December 19, encouraging parents to bring their children to the event.
Reports indicate that the venue was overcrowded with children, far exceeding its capacity, which likely triggered the stampede. Governor Makinde concluded his statement by offering prayers for the victims and their families, extending his heartfelt sympathy to those affected by the tragic incident.
