Former Nigerian footballer Ifeanyi Udeze has questioned CAF’s surprising decision to leave out Super Eagles defender William Troost-Ekong from the 2024 Africa Best XI. This decision has puzzled many football fans, given Troost-Ekong’s incredible performance during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AfCON).
Troost-Ekong had a remarkable tournament, earning the prestigious Most Valuable Player (MVP) award. He also played a crucial role in Nigeria’s journey to the final, where they narrowly lost 2-1 to Cote d’Ivoire. The defender scored the opening goal in the final and was a consistent performer throughout the competition, ensuring Nigeria lost only one game.
Udeze expressed his frustration over the snub, stating that Troost-Ekong’s performances spoke for themselves and should have guaranteed him a spot in the Best XI without requiring votes. Many fans agree, calling CAF’s decision unfair to a player who had such a significant impact on his team’s success.
The exclusion has sparked discussions about how CAF selects players for its Team of the Year and whether exceptional individual performances are being overlooked.
“Troost Ekong is the AFCON MVP; why isn’t he on the Africa best XI?
“He doesn’t need a vote; his place should be automatic,” the ex-Super Eagles star said on Brila FM.
