President Tinubu Appoints Aisha Garba as UBEC Boss
President Bola Tinubu has appointed Aisha Garba, a Senior Education Specialist with the World Bank, as the new Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC).
Appointment Announced by Presidential Adviser
The announcement was made on Tuesday in a statement by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.
Aisha Garba’s Experience and Background
According to the statement, Aisha Garba has over 15 years of experience with the World Bank, where she contributed to projects that helped Nigeria achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). She has also worked on several other international projects.
President Tinubu’s Vision for Education
President Tinubu emphasized that Garba’s role is to promote quality education and ensure Nigerian children can compete globally. Her leadership will drive the government’s renewed hope agenda in the education sector.
Extensive International Experience
Bayo Onanuga noted that Garba has 24 years of experience in education and human development programmes across countries like Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Somalia, the United States, and the United Kingdom.
Proven Track Record in Education Reforms
Garba has led and managed education programmes from design to completion, ensuring they bring real impact. Her experience also includes working in fragile and conflict-affected areas to deliver sustainable solutions in education.
Collaboration with International Organizations
Apart from her work at the World Bank, Garba has collaborated with the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID), Muslim Aid Organization, BOND-UK, and Regent Foundation.
Educational Background
Garba earned her Bachelor’s degree in English and Computer Studies from Petra American University in Jordan in 2000. She later obtained a Master’s degree in International Development from the University of Birmingham, UK, in 2007.
