At least 20 people, mainly women and children, lost their lives in a tragic boat accident on River Benue on Saturday. The victims were traders returning home to Odenyi in Nasarawa Toto Local Government Area, Nasarawa State, after attending the Ocholonya market in Agatu Local Government Area, Benue State.

The wooden boat capsized near Ocholonya, leaving no survivors among its passengers, according to local reports. A resident, Adanyi, said, “The passengers were heading home after the market day when their boat capsized, leading to this heartbreaking loss of lives.”

Agatu Local Government Area Chairman, Melvin James, confirmed the unfortunate incident. He stated that the victims had visited Ocholonya market before attempting to return to their communities in Nasarawa State. “It’s true there was a boat mishap yesterday. We are working to reach out to families affected to offer our condolences,” James said.

Reports indicate conflicting casualty numbers, with local divers recovering some bodies while others remain unaccounted for. James emphasized the importance of verifying accurate information, noting that rescue operations are ongoing. He also revealed that he contacted the Nigerian Navy for assistance to support recovery efforts.

The incident underscores the dangers of unsafe transportation, particularly on waterways. Efforts are being made to recover all bodies and provide closure to grieving families.
