Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Olu Daramola, Takes Legal Action Over Alleged Defamatory Book
Olu Daramola, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and partner at the renowned Afe Babalola law chambers, has filed a defamation lawsuit against author and activist Dele Farotimi. The case, submitted to the Ojodu Abiodun Division of the Ogun State High Court, demands N500 million in damages for alleged defamatory content in Farotimi’s book, Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System.
Daramola claims that statements on page 64 of the book harm his reputation and portray him in a negative light. He alleges that the book has caused him ridicule, disrespect, and loss of prestige in the eyes of the public.
N500 million as compensation for harm to his reputation.
A public apology published in major national newspapers such as The Guardian and The Punch.
An order to collect and destroy all hard and digital copies of the book currently in circulation.
A ban to stop the further publication or distribution of the book.
10% annual interest on the judgment sum until it is fully paid.
This suit follows a similar one filed by Chief Afe Babalola (SAN), who is also challenging the contents of Farotimi’s book.
Farotimi is currently in the custody of the Nigeria Correctional Service and has not yet filed a response to the lawsuit. No hearing date has been set for the case.
The lawsuit is part of an ongoing legal battle between Dele Farotimi and top legal professionals in Nigeria. It underscores the impact of published works on personal and professional reputations, particularly in sensitive fields like law.
