Gunmen Attack Human Rights Leader, Emeka Umeagbalasi And Family In Anambra

Emeka Umeagbalasi, a prominent human rights activist and chairman of the International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law (Intersociety), and his family were attacked by gunmen in Anambra State on November 27. The attackers first opened fire and stole Umeagbalasi’s Mitsubishi Hilux truck from his driver, Comrade Chike Umeh. Though the vehicle was initially recovered, the gunmen stole it again and demanded a ransom of N250,000 for its return.

The attackers didn’t stop there. They forced Umeagbalasi’s wife, Blessing, their 4-year-old son Chimdiebube, their housemaid Somtochukwu Okafor, and the driver Umeh out of the vehicle at gunpoint. In addition to stealing the truck, the gunmen hijacked several other vehicles and took their occupants hostage. The gunmen held nine communities in the area under siege for over eight hours, creating chaos and fear among the residents.

The incident was reported to the Ekwulobia Police Division, and the Anambra State Police Command later confirmed the recovery of the stolen Hilux truck. Intersociety has written to the Anambra State Commissioner of Police, requesting the return of the stolen vehicle and other items that were taken during the attack. The attack on Umeagbalasi and his family highlights the increasing insecurity in the region and raises concerns about the safety of activists and their families in Anambra State.
