In a shocking crime from Hawaii, 73-year-old millionaire Gary Ruby was discovered buried in cement in the bathtub of his $2.2 million Honolulu home in 2022. Authorities claim that Ruby’s younger partner, 26-year-old Juan Tejedor Baron, killed him after learning that Ruby was HIV positive.
Court documents reveal that Baron admitted to strangling Ruby with a belt after Ruby disclosed his HIV status following a sexual encounter. Baron then reportedly tried to make the death appear as a suicide by slitting Ruby’s wrists. To conceal the body, Baron poured cement and coffee grounds over Ruby’s remains in the bathtub, even making a trip to purchase additional cement.
After Ruby’s death, Baron allegedly tried to take control of Ruby’s property, including his gold 2020 Audi A6 and his multimillion-dollar home. He falsely claimed ownership of both to investigators.
Authorities arrested Baron in California as he attempted to flee to Mexico. Police found him hiding in a crawl space beneath a bus bench at a station. Baron initially confessed to the murder but has since retracted his admission.
Baron pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, identity theft, and property theft as part of a deal that spared him from life without parole or a mandatory minimum sentence of more than 20 years. However, Baron now claims he was pressured into the plea and did not understand its terms due to a language barrier and the influence of prescription drugs.
Baron’s defense argues that his confession was coerced and is seeking to withdraw the guilty plea. A hearing, including testimonies from Baron’s former lawyers and a translator, is scheduled for December 23.
