Federal Government Launches ₦12 Billion Road Project After 40 Years of Delay

After waiting for 40 years, the residents of Eti-Oni, located in Atakumosa East Local Government Area of Osun, are celebrating the start of a ₦12 billion road construction project. On Wednesday, the Federal Government flagged off the long-awaited project, which will cover a 56-kilometer stretch of road. The project, set to be completed in 12 months, will be executed in phases.

The road construction, which is being supervised by the Federal Ministry of Works, is seen as a major step toward improving the region’s access to larger markets, especially for agricultural products. Eti-Oni, known for its cocoa production, will greatly benefit from this road, as it will ease transportation of cocoa and other farm produce to commercial centers.

Speaking at the event, Mr. David Umahi, the Minister of Works, highlighted that the road project was part of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. The project aims to unlock the economic potential of rural areas like Eti-Oni by improving infrastructure and connectivity.

Oba Dokun Thompson, the Oloni of Eti-Oni, expressed his joy and relief, noting that the town had suffered due to the lack of access to markets for many years. “Having fertile land but no road access is like having a cemetery,” he said. The road project, according to the Oba, will bring the town back to life and provide opportunities for the younger generation to get involved in agriculture.

Residents, including Chief Musibau Gbadamosi, shared their appreciation for the new road, seeing it as a boost to local agricultural activities and the economy. The road, which has been neglected for over 40 years, will now help the community reach new economic heights.

The people of Eti-Oni are hopeful that this project will not only improve their immediate environment but will also set an example of how infrastructure development can transform rural communities.
