Anambra Stakeholders Raise Concerns Over Rising Kidnappings Despite Numerous Checkpoints

In Anambra State, the issue of kidnapping has become a growing concern for residents and leaders, even with the presence of numerous police checkpoints. Despite the police’s efforts to maintain security along major roads like Onitsha-Owerri, Enugu-Awka-Onitsha, and Nkpor Old Road, kidnappers continue to target both rural and urban areas, especially as the holiday season approaches.

Recent reports show that kidnappers have become more active in the last few months, with many residents worrying that the situation will worsen during the Yuletide. The disappearance of Most Rev Prof. Godwin Okpala, a retired Archbishop, who went missing with his driver while traveling, has left the state in panic. His whereabouts remain unknown, further fueling concerns about the state’s security.

Various stakeholders, including civil society organizations, human rights groups, and politicians, are calling for stronger action from the state government. One of the suggestions from the Anambra State Security Network (ASN) is for the governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, to order the repainting of commercial vehicles with security codes. They argue that this would help in identifying criminals using unmarked vehicles to commit crimes, such as kidnapping.

Silas Madu, from the Anambra Human Rights Watch, highlighted that kidnappings have become a daily occurrence, even in areas with several police checkpoints. He expressed frustration with the fact that many of these checkpoints seem ineffective, with some officers allegedly more focused on extorting money from motorists than preventing crimes.

Valentine Ozigbo, a gubernatorial aspirant, also criticized the state’s handling of the growing insecurity. He pointed out that despite the alarming rise in kidnappings, there has been little to no reassuring response from the governor. Ozigbo emphasized that the state government must act swiftly to address the situation and restore security to the people.

While the state police command remains confident in their efforts, claiming to have arrested multiple suspects in recent weeks, the concern among residents continues to grow. With kidnappers seemingly emboldened, it’s clear that stronger measures are needed to protect the citizens of Anambra.

As the security situation in Anambra worsens, there are calls for immediate government action to curb the rise of kidnapping and other crimes in the state. It’s a critical time for the leadership to act decisively to ensure the safety and well-being of the people.
