Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, has spoken out against Kemi Badenoch, the leader of the UK Conservative Party, for comments he believes disrespect Nigeria.
Speaking during the 10th Annual Migration Dialogue held at the State House in Abuja, Shettima expressed pride in Nigeria’s role on the global stage despite Badenoch’s criticisms. He acknowledged her right to express her opinions but emphasized that her remarks do not undermine Nigeria’s importance as a nation.
Shettima pointed out Nigeria’s growing influence, saying, “By 2050, Nigeria will be the third most populous nation on earth, playing a key role in supporting global development.” He described Nigeria as the “greatest black nation on earth,” noting that one out of every three or four black people worldwide is Nigerian.
The Vice President’s remarks followed reports that Nigeria’s Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) attempted to reach Badenoch after her election as UK Conservative Party leader in November 2024. According to NIDCOM Chairperson Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the outreach received no response.
Shettima also addressed Badenoch’s choice to keep or remove “Kemi” from her name, affirming it was her right but adding that it does not erase her connection to her heritage.
He concluded by highlighting the positive contributions of migrants, particularly Nigerians, to society and economic growth worldwide.
