The Nigerian Police Force (NPF) is taking significant steps to improve its professionalism and public trust. Recent reforms include leadership changes and strict disciplinary actions to address misconduct within the force.
Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, announced the redeployment of four senior officers to key positions:
- AIG Suleiman M. Yusuf: Assigned to Zone 9 in Umuahia.
- AIG Ahmed Ammani: Posted to Zone 1 in Kano.
- AIG Zachariah Fera: Assigned to Zone 4 in Makurdi.
- AIG Augustina N. Ogbodo: Moved to the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) in Lagos.
These postings are part of a larger restructuring effort following the retirement of some senior officers and the promotion of DIG Ari Muhammed Ali to head the Department of Operations in Abuja.
Egbetokun tasked the new leaders with ensuring discipline, maintaining public order, and setting an example of ethical leadership. He urged them to take decisive actions against misconduct and foster public confidence in the police.
In a separate move, the Police Service Commission (PSC) reviewed 109 disciplinary cases, leading to the dismissal of 19 senior officers. Among those dismissed were:
- 10 Assistant Superintendents
- 6 Deputy Superintendents
- 2 Chief Superintendents
- 1 Superintendent
Additionally, 19 officers were demoted, including an Assistant Commissioner of Police. The PSC also issued severe reprimands and warnings to other officers for negligence and failure to follow lawful instructions.
Two Assistant Inspectors General were disciplined—one received a reprimand, and the other was formally warned. Most of the dismissed officers will face prosecution, and a few cases require further investigation.
The Nigerian Police Force is committed to enhancing its operational standards, leadership, and accountability. By addressing misconduct and ensuring ethical leadership, the NPF aims to rebuild public trust and uphold the integrity of its service.
