The President of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Festus Osifo, has advised Nigerians not to politicise the ongoing discussions about the controversial tax reform bills. He also cautioned against adding tribal or religious sentiments to the debate, saying these reforms are crucial but require adjustments to serve the majority of Nigerians better.
Speaking during an interview on Politics Today on Channels Television, Osifo explained that the tax bills had been discussed at various government levels, including the Northern Governors Forum, Nigerian Governors Forum, and National Economic Council.
“At this stage of our development, we should be careful not to politicise everything,” he said. “Bringing in tribal or ethnic discussions isn’t the right approach.”
Osifo also commented on the concerns surrounding Value Added Tax (VAT) deductions. Previously, VAT collection was tied to where a company’s headquarters was located. However, the proposed reforms aim to collect VAT directly from the source. He raised questions about whether the country has the tools, knowledge, and skills to ensure fair implementation without leaving anyone at a disadvantage.
He acknowledged that resistance to change is natural but encouraged Nigerians to compile their concerns and submit them to the National Assembly. He emphasized that lawmakers should invite local and international experts to review the provisions and ensure the reforms are beneficial and sustainable.
“The National Assembly must listen to Nigerians,” Osifo stressed. “They should not only rely on the Executive’s experts but also engage other professionals who can dissect the reforms and create a system that stands the test of time.”
By working together, Osifo believes the tax reforms can be fine-tuned to promote economic growth and fairness for all citizens.
