Corruption is a major problem in Nigeria, causing economic struggles and social decay. The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) recently stressed the urgent need for action. At an event in Yenagoa for International Anti-Corruption Day, ICPC called on Nigerians to embrace courage and fight corruption through whistleblowing and transparency.
Mrs. Ekere Usiere, the Resident Anti-Corruption Commissioner, gave a powerful speech titled From Fear to Courage: Overcoming Barriers to Whistleblowing in Nigeria. She emphasized that corruption is a threat to Nigeria’s future, saying, “If we don’t kill corruption, corruption will kill Nigeria.”
She urged citizens to overcome fear and expose corrupt practices, adding, “To effectively blow the whistle, we need courage. Fear only allows corruption to thrive. If you see something, say something.”
The event was organized by the Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU) of the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB). The NCDMB has taken significant steps to prevent corruption, including:
- Training staff in anti-corruption strategies.
- Conducting corruption risk assessments across departments like procurement and human resources.
- Supporting ACTU with necessary resources to promote transparency.
The Executive Secretary of NCDMB, Felix Ogbe, highlighted the importance of raising awareness, especially among young people, about the harmful effects of corruption. He reaffirmed the board’s commitment to preventing corruption through vigilance and preventive measures.
As part of the event, students from Federal Government colleges participated in a debate on corruption. Federal Government College, Warri, Delta State, took first place, while Federal Government College, Kazaure, Jigawa State, was the runner-up.
This initiative serves as a reminder that the fight against corruption requires everyone’s involvement. Nigerians must adopt a culture of honesty and accountability to rebuild the nation. The courage to report wrongdoing today will shape a brighter tomorrow for Nigeria.
Let’s take the first step: If you see something, say something!
