Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, representing Abia North Senatorial District, has disclosed that he received threats from Simon Ekpa, a self-proclaimed leader of the banned Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). According to Kalu, Ekpa threatened him because he refused to support the Biafra movement.
Speaking during an interview with Arise Television, Kalu explained that despite the threats, he remained firm in his stance. He emphasized his commitment to safeguarding lives and property in his constituency and urged leaders to be firm in addressing security challenges.
“Simon Ekpa was calling and threatening me because I don’t support Biafra, but I left him to his conscience,” Kalu said. “As a leader, I prioritize security and can do anything to protect the lives of my people. Crime should not be tolerated in any state.”
Kalu called on South-East governors to take bold steps against non-state actors who disrupt peace in the region. He stressed the importance of intelligence-based strategies in fighting crime and maintaining law and order.
Simon Ekpa, who is based in Finland, was recently arrested by Finnish authorities on November 21 for spreading terrorist propaganda online. He has since been sent to prison, with a court in Finland setting May 2025 as the deadline for filing charges against him.
Kalu’s remarks highlight the need for decisive leadership and effective security measures to address the rising challenges in Nigeria’s South-East region.
