The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has announced that it will reveal a new tariff plan for the telecommunications sector on December 13, 2024. This change is part of its efforts to simplify tariffs, improve customer experience, and ensure fair competition.
Dr. Maida Wada, the NCC’s Executive Vice Chairman, shared this update during a media session in Abuja. Represented by Mr. Reuben Muoka, the Director of Public Affairs, Dr. Wada explained that the earlier release date of October 27 was postponed to complete stakeholder consultations.
“With input from various stakeholders, the new tariff plan will be announced on December 13, 2024,” Dr. Wada stated.
The NCC has also instructed telecom operators to limit their tariff and promotional plans to a maximum of seven. This step is designed to make tariffs easier to understand, protect consumers, and foster transparency in the industry.
Dr. Wada emphasized that the new policy will reduce confusion about data and airtime usage, adding that the NCC has been running awareness campaigns to educate the public.
Addressing concerns about data depletion, Dr. Wada highlighted that an NCC audit revealed many consumers misunderstood how data usage works, especially on Android devices. The commission is working to educate consumers on how data is consumed through various campaigns.
The NCC has also directed all licensed telecom operators to update their contact details by January 9, 2025, in line with the Licensing Regulations of 2019. This step aims to improve regulatory processes and strengthen oversight in the sector.
Operators who fail to comply could face penalties, including fines, license suspension, or revocation.
These measures demonstrate the NCC’s commitment to protecting consumers, promoting transparency, and enhancing the telecommunications sector in Nigeria.
