Terrorist groups are increasingly turning to social media platforms to promote their activities. The government has recognized this trend and is taking action to stop it. Popular platforms like TikTok have become hotspots for such content, where terrorists openly showcase weapons, flaunt cash, and even make strange public requests.
For example, on Thursday, a suspected terrorist with nearly 8,000 followers and over 27,000 likes on TikTok posted videos from a forest. The clips showed him arranging bundles of N1,000 and N500 notes on a mat. Earlier this year, another video went viral of a terrorist asking Nigerians to share their bank account details, claiming it was to reward people who praised their leader, Mohammed Bello Turji Kachalla.
The National Coordinator of the Counter-Terrorism Centre, Major General Adamu Laka, has assured Nigerians that the government is actively addressing these concerns. Speaking to reporters, Laka explained that these social media posts are part of a propaganda strategy to spread fear among the public.
“These threats are nothing but an attempt to scare Nigerians. People should not take them seriously,” he said.
Laka also challenged the terrorists to face security forces directly if they were truly bold. He called them cowards for hiding behind online platforms and spreading fear.
The government’s efforts show a strong commitment to combating this new form of terrorism and ensuring public safety. Nigerians are encouraged to remain calm and trust the measures being put in place to counter these threats.
