In Ogun State, a man named Enitan Awoyemi, 41, has been arrested by the Amotekun Corps after he faked his own kidnapping to avoid paying a N1 million debt. Awoyemi, who lives in the Irolu-Remo area of Ikenne Local Government, was caught on Wednesday after a detailed investigation.
It all started on November 10, when Awoyemi’s wife, Mrs. Tope Awoyemi, went to the Amotekun outpost in Irolu to report that her husband had called her. He claimed to have been kidnapped the day before by unknown people who were demanding a N5 million ransom for his release.
However, after receiving the report, the Amotekun intelligence team began looking into the matter. Their investigation revealed that Awoyemi had been struggling with a gambling debt of around N1 million, which he had accumulated from playing a lotto game. He had won N6 million in the past and used part of the money to buy a car and motorcycle. But when he couldn’t repay his debts, he allegedly faked the kidnapping to get out of paying.
With help from the Vigilantes Group of Nigeria and local community members, the Amotekun Corps tracked Awoyemi down to several areas. He was eventually arrested at Irolu Okada Park during a routine patrol. Upon his arrest, officers noticed a strong smell of insecticide on him, which raised concerns that he may have tried to harm himself. He was taken to a hospital for treatment.
Once he recovers, Awoyemi will be handed over to the police for further investigation. The Amotekun Corps emphasized the importance of community cooperation in preventing such crimes and ensuring the safety of Ogun State residents. The authorities also urged people to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to help maintain law and order.
