In a bold move to improve financial transparency, Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has ordered the freezing of all state-owned bank accounts in commercial banks. This freeze will stay in place until a full review of the government’s finances is conducted. The Governor has instructed all banks, as well as leaders of various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), to comply immediately. Any official who goes against this order will face strict penalties.
Fred Itua, the Chief Press Secretary, confirmed the order in a statement, stressing that no money should be withdrawn from any state bank account without explicit permission. The freeze aims to protect Edo’s funds and ensure they are used correctly.
The Governor also announced a change for the Ministry of Roads and Bridges, which will now return to its previous title, the Ministry of Works. He criticized the former administration for creating the Ministry of Roads and Bridges name without delivering on actual infrastructure projects, like building new roads or bridges. Governor Okpebholo believes the former name was not justified since no major bridge projects were completed.
With these changes, Governor Okpebholo aims to increase accountability and correct past decisions that may not have served the state’s best interests. He also hinted at more decisions that will be made soon to support Edo State’s progress.
