In a bold move against corruption, the Abia State government is stepping up efforts to combat pension fraud involving civil servants. Governor Alex Otti recently revealed that multiple suspects in a pension fraud scheme have been arrested and will soon face court proceedings. Some of these individuals are currently living outside Nigeria, and the state is working to bring them back to the country for prosecution.
Governor Otti made this announcement during a media briefing in Umuahia, emphasizing his administration’s zero tolerance for corruption. He expressed frustration with those defending one of the fraud suspects, saying, “If you’re against the arrest of someone who has stolen, you’re indirectly supporting the theft.”
Otti reported that approximately 10 to 11 people are involved in this pension fraud case. His administration aims to hold them accountable, regardless of their location. The decision to repatriate suspects shows Abia State’s commitment to ensuring justice reaches all involved in this financial crime.
In other announcements, Otti confirmed that Abia State University’s Umuahia campus will be relocated back to its main campus in Uturu. Despite student concerns about the change, the governor explained that this decision is in their best interest. The state government is also planning to improve facilities at the Uturu campus, including new accommodations and reliable water supply.
The governor also addressed the longstanding power outage in Ohafia, a region in Abia State. His administration recently set up the Greater Ohafia Development Authority to tackle local infrastructure challenges and boost development in the area.
Additionally, Otti acknowledged recent complaints from civil servants about errors in salary payments. He has instructed the Finance Commissioner and the Accountant General to resolve these issues promptly to ensure fair and accurate compensation.
Through these initiatives, Governor Otti’s administration is showing a clear stance against corruption and a dedication to addressing key issues impacting the state’s growth and the well-being of its citizens.
