Top officials from Nigeria’s security sector are currently in Glasgow, United Kingdom, participating in the 92nd INTERPOL General Assembly. The event, which started on November 4 and concludes on November 7, brings together representatives from 196 INTERPOL member countries to discuss critical security challenges, global crime prevention, and international policing collaboration.
Leading the Nigerian delegation is the Minister of Police Affairs, Senator Dr. Ibrahim Gaidam, alongside the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun. Also attending are Vice President of INTERPOL AIG Umar Baba (Rtd.), Abuja’s INTERPOL NCB Chief CP Olu Adegbite, and well-known INTERPOL consultant Sir Chikwe Udensi.
The Nigerian officials have joined police chiefs and law enforcement heads from around the world to discuss key topics like global crime partnerships, advanced policing strategies, data sharing, and tackling organized crime. These discussions aim to boost international collaboration to combat global security challenges.
Aside from attending the assembly’s main sessions, the Nigerian team has also engaged in separate meetings with Europol members and other country representatives to explore potential partnerships. These side meetings are geared toward strengthening Nigeria’s police force and supporting the efforts of the West African Police Chiefs Committee (WAPCCO), currently led by Nigeria, in tackling organized crime across West Africa.
Inspector General Egbetokun emphasized Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening its collaboration with other police forces worldwide, especially through its INTERPOL unit. By working closely with international agencies, Nigeria aims to improve the investigation and prevention of cross-border crimes, enhancing security within Nigeria and across the West African region. This global cooperation is expected to bolster Nigeria’s crime-fighting capabilities and bring about a safer environment for its citizens.
