After the unexpected passing of his wife, Patience Umo Eno, Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State made the decision to appoint his daughter, Helen Obareki, as the Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady. This appointment sparked some debate, with questions about whether the role is officially recognized in Nigeria’s constitution. Governor Eno recently addressed these concerns, defending his decision and providing clarity on the role.

Governor Eno explained that Helen’s selection was based purely on her competence and relevant experience. Having served as a Personal Assistant to her mother, Helen closely observed the responsibilities and demands of the role. Through this position, she gained firsthand knowledge and understanding of her mother’s community projects and advocacy efforts, particularly with the Golden Initiative For All (GIFA). According to Governor Eno, this experience makes her highly qualified to oversee and continue these initiatives.

In response to critics, Governor Eno clarified that, in the state, formal responsibilities for women’s affairs are managed by the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare. The Office of the First Lady and GIFA, however, function as a supportive platform for community welfare projects. This setup ensures there is no overlap or conflict with the Ministry of Women Affairs.

Governor Eno emphasized that GIFA was established by his late wife as a way to serve and empower people in the community. To honor her legacy, he stated that GIFA would continue as a lasting foundation dedicated to helping people, especially women, within Akwa Ibom State.

Through this appointment, Governor Eno hopes to maintain the momentum of his late wife’s work, with Helen Obareki continuing her mother’s vision. He reassured the public that his daughter’s appointment reflects her skills and her deep commitment to continuing these positive changes in the community.
