The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has confirmed that Enugu’s Akanu Ibiam International Airport will stay open through the Christmas season. There are no plans to shut down due to runway conditions, as some reports had suggested.
Mr. Hillary Umunna, the Enugu Airport Manager, shared this news in a recent interview, assuring that the airport’s runway is safe and in good shape for flights. Minor maintenance has been done to keep the runway ready for ongoing operations, making it reliable for the holiday travel rush.
Umunna noted that various airlines, including Ethiopian Airlines, Air Peace, Ibom Air, and Green Africa Airways, operated flights smoothly over the weekend. They flew to key destinations like Lagos, Abuja, and Addis Ababa, showing that the airport is fully functional.
Enugu Airport’s location presents unique challenges, which FAAN addresses with continuous upkeep. During the rainy season, more maintenance is usually needed, but the FAAN management is on top of this to keep operations safe. Umunna mentioned that a technical team from FAAN’s headquarters recently inspected the runway, concluding that no major repairs are necessary for now.
Should any larger runway work be required, FAAN plans to wait until after Christmas to avoid disrupting holiday travel. Travelers can rest assured that Enugu Airport will remain open and operational throughout the festive season.
