In a shocking event, 16 farmers were kidnapped by bandits while they were working in their fields in Bena village and nearby areas of the Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area in Kebbi State. The attack took place when the victims were tending to their guinea corn farms.
Lawali Umar, the Secretary of the Security Committee in Wasagu, confirmed the incident. He noted that in a separate attack, bandits also raided the Tudun Wada area and abducted six more people. Fortunately, army personnel quickly intervened, engaging the bandits in a gunfight. This brave response led to the successful rescue of the six individuals taken during that attack.
While some of the 16 abducted farmers managed to escape, around nine are still being held captive. The bandits are demanding an undisclosed ransom for their release. In light of these ongoing attacks, Umar has called on the Kebbi State Government to enhance security in vulnerable regions, especially in areas like Yar Maitaba, Mai Rai Rai, and Tungar Sabo, which are known strongholds for the bandits.
The situation highlights the urgent need for improved security measures to protect local communities from such violent acts.
“We commend the state government’s efforts against banditry, but with the guinea corn harvest season upon us, our farmers need better security,” he urged.
