National Grid Experiences Partial Collapse, Fourth Incident In October

The National Grid in Nigeria experienced another partial collapse on Tuesday night, leading to blackouts in several areas. This incident marks the ninth grid failure of 2024 and the fourth occurrence this month alone.

Key power plants across the country, including Sapele, Rivers IPP, Omotosho, Omoku, Okpai, Kainji, and Ibom Power, reported zero power generation. Additionally, Dadinkowa G.S also had no output throughout the day. By 10:08 PM, the grid’s capacity plummeted to just 2,037.2 megawatts (MW).

These repeated collapses have raised serious concerns about the reliability of electricity in Nigeria. Many homes and businesses are struggling with inconsistent power supply, making it difficult for people to go about their daily lives.

In response to the ongoing crisis, the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, announced that electricity would be restored to northern Nigeria within 72 hours. He addressed senators about the widespread outages affecting the region and the recent issues with the national grid.

On October 22, the Transmission Company of Nigeria reported that a critical transmission line tripped, causing outages across the North-East, North-West, and parts of North-Central Nigeria. Additionally, the Independent System Operator Executive Director, Nafisatu Ali, confirmed that insurgents had vandalized the Shiroro-Kaduna line, which is crucial for supplying power to northern regions.

To address these challenges, President Bola Tinubu has directed military support to help secure repairs and restore electricity in the affected areas.

The situation highlights the urgent need for improvements in Nigeria’s energy infrastructure to ensure stable and reliable power for all citizens.
