Protesters gathering to mark the fourth anniversary of the #EndSARS movement were arrested by the Lagos State Police Command at Lekki tollgate. The protestors had come together to remember the nationwide demonstrations that began in 2020, which called for an end to police brutality in Nigeria.
As they approached the tollgate, armed police officers were on guard. They warned the group not to rally in the area. When the protesters did not leave, the officers responded by firing tear gas into the crowd to disperse them.
Shortly after the initial group was scattered, another set of activists arrived at the tollgate for their memorial walk. However, the police quickly moved in and arrested around 20 individuals, including Taiwo Soweto, a prominent figure in the #EndBadGovernance movement. Those arrested were placed inside a police van, with their fate uncertain at the time.
This incident highlights the ongoing tension surrounding the #EndSARS movement, which continues to resonate with many Nigerians calling for justice and better governance.
