In a significant move to support civil servants, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has announced an increase in the minimum wage to ₦85,000. This decision aims to alleviate the financial struggles faced by workers due to current economic challenges. The news was reported by News360 Nigeria.
The announcement came after a closed-door meeting held at Government House in Port Harcourt, where the governor met with labor representatives. Dr. George Nwaeke, the Head of the Rivers State Civil Service, confirmed the new wage, noting that it exceeds the national minimum wage. Payments are set to start in November 2024.
Dr. Nwaeke expressed that this increase is a major milestone for civil servants in Rivers State, who have not experienced such favorable conditions since the state’s creation. When questioned about any outstanding payments, he mentioned that a technical committee would be established to develop a plan for addressing these arrears.
Comrade Emecheta Chuku, Chairman of the Joint Public Service Negotiating Council, described the ₦85,000 wage as a meaningful gesture from the governor, highlighting his commitment to worker welfare despite ongoing challenges. He expressed gratitude for the governor’s support.
Similarly, Comrade Alex Agwanwor, Chairman of the Rivers State Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), noted that with this new wage, Rivers State now stands alongside Lagos State as one of the highest-paying states in Nigeria. He commended Governor Fubara for being labor-friendly and assured their continued support for his administration.
Labor leaders pledged to communicate this positive development to workers and reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Governor Fubara throughout his tenure. This increase marks a hopeful step towards better economic conditions for civil servants in Rivers State.
